The People’s Will

Friends, I”m hoping you’re going to join us February 17th in Washington DC.  Officially, we’ll be there to ask the President, once again, to reject the Keystone Pipeline and prevent the exploitation of the Tar Sands.  More than that, we are showing the government the will of the people – that it is our will to stop climate change as quickly as humanly possible.  I know it’s not easy to schlep to DC, believe me!  Ben went and got arrested last fall, we went with our 4 year old daughter when I was eight months pregnant last November, and now we’re making the trek with a 5 year old and a 1 year old.

I do not have time to go to DC.  I also do not have the right to stay home, and rob my children and yours of a future.  Climate change isn’t about polar bears, people – if carbon emissions continue at their current rate, we have 15 years until we pass the point where rising temperatures are catastrophic for life on earth.  If the Tar Sands are exploited, we have much, much less time.  Earth will survive – but humans probably will not, and personally, I still like humans.

So I hope you will join us.  We can say we want environmental protections, but if we spend our time driving cars like usual, buying electricity from coal and nuclear plants, and generally buying and throwing away tons of crap, our economy and our government will keep listening to those actions.  Here is a chance to create another action – join us for what promises to be the largest civil demonstration of our generation.  Let’s make it the biggest ever – too big to fail.

With love,

P.S.  There are lots of buses organizing to get people to DC – there’s one leaving from the Pioneer Valley, here’s the info:

The bus will leave from Greenfield on Saturday, Feb 16th in the
morning, make a stop in Northampton, and arrive in D.C. in the evening
around 5 pm. It’s looking like we can stay in a church for the night
in DC and are awaiting confirmation on this.  The rally will be held
the next day from 12 pm- 4 pm and our bus will depart after the rally,
arriving home to Western Mass around 12:30 am. Our minimum number of
people to charter the bus is 40, making bus tickets $100 round trip
(sleeping in the church would be free; bring camp bags and pads).
However, we’d LOVE to fill the bus, which would reduce the ticket
price to $73-$74. Because we have to put down a non-refundable deposit
for the bus on Jan 25th, we are asking folks to mail in checks for
$100  by the 23rd of Jan (next Wednesday!). Then, we will refund each
person based on the final number of travellers.  If we do not reach
our minimum of 40, everyone will receive a full refund.  You can mail
checks to Andrew Kurowski, PO Box 36, Heath, MA 01346.  If you do
decide to come, please email us and let us know as well as sending the
check.  Also please feel free to call/ email with any other questions.

Good on you, Adrie, for participating in this demonstration and encouraging your readers to do the same. I so appreciate your engagement with politics within the home *and* beyond it; that’s one of the reasons I’m an avid reader of your blog.

    I’ll start checking my schedule…

Fighting the Northern Gateway pipeline up here in Northern BC has been such a huge part of our lives over the past few years- I send my thoughts and good wishes to you and your family fighting there. I have been both heartbroken and filled with hope many many times over this issue, but most of all I am humbled by the passion and emotion of the people protecting their lands and their planet. I’ll be thinking of your family on February 17th.
